Laparoscopic gastric bypass for morbid obesity in a patient with situs inversus totalis

Abstract

Situs inversus totalis (SIT) is a rare congenital disorder that is characterized by a complete reversal of abdominal and thoracic organs. Laparoscopic gastric surgery may pose a challenge in patients with the condition due to mirror-image anatomy. Further studies are required to assess the impact of surgery on those afflicted with this disorder. We report a case of 22-year-old female with SIT who successfully underwent laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Laparoscopic surgery is feasible in patients with SIT once anatomical considerations are taken into account.
