Abstract

Demonstrable high quality of a simulation of the disposal of nuclear fuel waste is crucial for the assessment of the disposal concept. The elements of quality are described, as pertaining to models of the controlling processes, data interpreted from field and laboratory measurements, and computer software representing the models.Procedures for quality assurance and features that enhance quality are discussed. Two major factors are identified: comparison and critical review. Simulation data and results can be compared with field and laboratory observations, with alternate solutions, or with expert judgment. Critical review by scientists and other interested parties, facilitated by thorough documentation, can ensure that the appropriate processes are being accurately modeled.
