Abstract
In the UK, the Highways Agency (HA) has worked with the Wildlife Trusts to ensure the safe passage of otters and badgers under strategic roads and motorways. Advice on best practice is given in the 'Design manual for roads and bridges'. Badgers' movement patterns follow established pathways. Otters are likely to cross a road where they cannot pass along the riverbank under a road. The HA is required to assess the impact of its activities on wildlife and identify mitigation measures for species or habitats affected by HA activities. For otters and badgers, viaducts, large bridges or culverts give safe passage across roads. Dedicated underpasses or ledges within culverts and bridge structures can be used. Otter and badger pipes and culverts are usually constructed with pre-cast concrete sections. Corrugated steel, aluminium or plastic can also be used. Fencing is required to funnel animals towards dedicated crossings. The costs of such crossings are outlined.
