Economic Policy and Democracy in South Africa

Abstract

The article deals with economic reforms in the South African economy that commenced in the 1970s and have continued until the present. The options and choices adopted by the government in the periodpolit.pdb.journal1994-2004 are examined. Issues focused on include changes in the allocation of state spending, social delivery, the restoring of macroeconomic stability, and structural reform. The impact of democracy on economic policy is analysed, and finally, economic achievements and failings of democracy are examined.
