Abstract
This is a review paper that discussed the subject of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) drawing
from scholarly opinions in extant literature. The paper examined the evolution of CSR. Its meaning, nature and
perspectives as well. The paper concluded that though the practice of CSR by firms was initially of a philanthropic
nature, it has however, transcended to being aligned with core business objectives. The initial focus of CSR was
majorly on voluntary donations and contributions to communities in areas of identified need such as education,
healthcare, poverty alleviation and community development. But today, CSR engagements are now increasingly
aligned with the primary business objectives and societal imperatives, and explicitly driven by policies embedded in
relevant legislation and standards. Therefore, organisations are encouraged to entrench CSR practices is its agenda
and operational policies.
