Cellular service providers are already in the last phase of the deployment of third-generation (3G) services in major parts of the world realistically with an achievement of higher data rates, even though the expected standards are not fully met. To achieve the goals of true broadband service, the systems have to make the leap to fourth-generation (4G) wireless networks. This new generation of wireless systems is supposed to complement and replace 3G systems with a minimum data rate of 20 Mbps at one-tenth the cost of 3G.
