Abstract

Low-noise downconverters for 22GHz DBS (Direct Broadcasting Satellite) reception have been developed using low-cost components that are already marketed for 12GHz DBS. Two topologies using a 10GHz LO (Local Oscillator), one with a subharmonically pumped mixer and the other with double frequency conversion, have been evaluated. All the circuits developed use packaged components on soft substrate and are compatible with mass-production techniques. A total converter noise figure of less than 1.8dB has been achieved over the frequency range 21.4GHz to 22.0GHz.
