Abstract

The author compares for 2B + D (160 kbit/s) ISDN connections, the costs of various architectures (shared and point-to-point solutions), in order to define good solutions. This makes it possible to: quantify the cost differences between single and dual fiber connections; determine, for passive optical networks (PONs), the best splitting ratios, and the influence of splitter positioning on access cost; establish, for point-to-point solutions, cost objectives for the terminal equipment in order to achieve economic parity with the best shared fiber systems; and underscore the respective proportions of civil engineering (infrastructure), cable and equipment costs.
