Abstract
The decolorization of Acid Red 1 (AR1) in aqueous solution was investigated by Fenton-like process. The effect of different reaction parameters such as different iron ions loading on Kuala Kangsar clay (KKC), dosage of catalyst, initial pH, the initial hydrogen peroxide concentration ([H2O2]0), the initial concentration of AR1 ([AR1]0) and the reaction temperature on the decolorization of AR1 was studied. The best reacting conditions were found to be 0.60 wt.% of iron ions loading on KKC, dosage catalyst = 3.0 g/L, initial pH = 2.5, [H2O2]0 = 8 mM, [AR1]0 = 50 mg/L at temperature 30 °C. Under these conditions, 99% decolorization of AR1 was achieved within 140 min reaction time. The results proved that this new catalyst is highly effective for the decolorization of AR1 in an aqueous solution.
