Abstract

The prime objective of system Operations & Control-SOA (South Operating Area) department is to ensure the safe, secure and economic operation of entire system. This paper presents all aspects of SOA operations to meet demand for CY2016 summer peak. It enumerates the operating conditions/constraints, which need to be applied for that period. It also identifies the system bottlenecks if any and elaborates description of all necessary control actions as well as the functions of the existing automatic facilities under critical contingency cases in addition to determine if system voltages remain within specified limits under various contingency conditions, and whether equipment such as transformers and conductors are overloaded. Power flow studies that were performed to check the security of both bulk network and the groups under outage of single transmission facility and also limited double contingencies i.e. outage of O/H lines on the same tower or outage of two cable circuits laid in the same trench. Thermal over load of 5% of the normal rating or more as well as voltage violations of more than + 5% for transmission equipment outages, have been reported. The consequences of such contingencies and recommended remedial actions are summarized. Load-flow studies are often used to identify the need for additional generation, capacitive, or inductive VAR support, or the placement of capacitors and/or reactors to maintain system voltages within specified limits. Also Short circuit current calculations for the adopted running arrangement are reported for SOA substations. The merits of the introduced techniques through a study case for analyzing an existing power flow in SOA using Power System Simulation for Engineering (PSS/E) computer package Comprehensive knowledge of the wide area system to which the scheme will be applied — Well-developed system planning criteria defining. — The undesired yet possible contingency conditions. — The overall system performance criteria and the throughput timing based on system studies The merits of the introduced techniques were highlighted through a study case using (PSS/E) computer package.
