Abstract

Cascading events may lead to major disruption if such emergencies are not managed properly. While this is still a challenge for power system operators and planners, a proper analysis with mitigation measures is needed to prevent such incidents. This paper presents a framework for an online cascading analysis application to reduce the potential risk of cascading outages. The proposed framework has been tested with the TNB system. The remedial actions recommendation from the online cascading analysis application have been validated using real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulations. The results show that the recommended remedial actions can effectively mitigate thermal, voltage and stability violations, thus reducing the risk of cascading outages.
