Abstract

Amid the rapid growth of the computer industry and its attendant expansion of capability, it is relatively easy for the industry to overlook items of potentially vast significance. One such item, mass storage, has been used since 1963 for job shop support, as well as for real time support, of manned space exploration. These applications have shown that mass storage can dramatically reduce requirements for main storage and at the same time improve system performance.
