Abstract

The high-performance characteristics of Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) motor have made them indispensable for Electric Vehicle (EV) applications. The physical replacement of rotor windings with the Permanent Magnets (PMs), makes the BLDC motor more compact, generating high torque-power density. However, the continuous operation of BLDC motors in EVs make them vulnerable to faults. This paper illustrates the importance of PM-type BLDC motor for EV applications and the time-efficient fault diagnosis of the motor when subjected to fault conditions. The proposed methodology of fault diagnosis is feasible for the early detection of fault in its incipient stage.
