Abstract

Abstract This chapter focuses on the origin, geographical distribution, morphological and phenological characteristics, cultivation history, breeding, vegetative propagation methods and molecular genetics and genomics of pecans (Carya illinoinensis). The importance of developing various genetic manipulation methods for the improvement of the disease and insect resistance, yield and nut quality of pecan germplasm is also discussed.
