Tasking in standard PL/I

Abstract

This paper describes the treatment of asynchronous processing in “Standard PL/I” and how it is related to the “old language”. By “Standard PL/I” we mean the language being developed by American National Standards Institute Committee X3J1 and European Computer Manufacturers Association Committee TC10. Currently this language is scheduled for publication as a proposed standard in December 1973. By the “old language” we mean that subset of IBM's PL/I which the standards committees took as the starting point for their work. In the area of asynchronous processing, the development from old language to Standard PL/I was carried out by X3J12, the language development subcommittee of X3J1.
