Abstract
The reduction in system inertia due to the integration of renewable energy is likely to cause blackouts due to high RoCoF and frequency nadir issues unless issues are taken to mitigate it. To maintain adequate inertia in the system, there is a need to provide sufficient fast frequency response. This paper considers using residential backup storage system simultaneously for backup and fast frequency response. A control strategy is proposed to effectively use the backup device for these two purposes and is validated using Hardware in the Loop Simulation. The aggregated effects of a large pool of these backup storage system are investigated on different frequency profile and transient stability analysis is performed to determine the frequency support from the proposed control strategy of the backup storage system.
