Abstract

This chapter describes recent developments and debates on older workers’ participationinthelabourforce,retirementdecisionsandthepensionsysteminSpain,fromasocialclass,healthandgenderperspective.Spainisoneofthemostagedcountriesintheworld.However,theSpanishpopulationhasoneofthelowestlevelsofemploymentamongpeopleaged50+inEurope.Womenretirelaterthanmen,mainlybecausetheycannotaffordtoretireearlier.Womenhavealowerprobabilityofachievingtherequisiteminimumcontributionsthatgivethemtherighttoreceiveapension.Forwomentransitiontopost-employmentlifedependsonperceivingretirementasforceduponthemforfamilyreasonsortheneedtocareforotherfamilymembersinpoorhealth.Healthisanimportantvariableindeterminingtherateofactivityamongpeopleunder60yearsold,howeverthisbecomeslessimportantastheincentivesofthepensionsystembecomemoreevident.Womenaremorelikelytohavetemporaryworkcontracts,greaterjobinsecurityandmoreexposuretoemotionalpressure.Ifwomenalsocareforrelatives,extendingworkinglifemayfurtherworsentheirmentalandphysicalhealthstatus.
