Monitoring Railway Turnout using its Moving Traces

Abstract

Turnouts (switches/points) are one of the most crucial and vulnerable part of the railway infrastructure. Several factors such as high frequency use, heavy freight and high-speed traffic provoke the turnouts to lead its alignment. The alignment change shall be in disastrous consequences. The turnout point movement, of which traces represent as oblique lines in time to moving distance, can inform its healthy state. In this paper, we tried to identify turnout health whether it is normal or not, by using the oblique line characteristics.
