Abstract

Abstract Of the many misconceptions about marriage, several myths have continued to survive despite the apparent lack of evidence to support them. The authors present myths regarding ending or sustaining a marriage that can be particularly problematic to clients. The myths presented in this manuscript are regarded by the authors as particularly misleading, some of which promote destructive reactions of the marital partners, whether a couple decides to stay together, separate, or divorce. Clients with unrealistic expectations regarding the outcomes of sustaining or ending a marriage are bound to be disappointed or upset. This article presents an educational handout for clients contemplating maintaining or ending their marital or couple relationship.
