From Fiend to Friend

Abstract

Ancient Egyptian funerary books are rich with incantations and depictions of an array of snakes. While some were considered evil creatures, others were deified. In this paper we are particularly interested in studying the serpent Sata, a serpent that appears in ancient Egyptian texts and representations from the Old Kingdom onwards. The serpent’s presence is predominant in the funerary context with its zenith in the Book of the Dead, where one of the Trans- formation Spells is dedicated to ensuring the transformation of the deceased into Sata. The material related to the serpent is studied and analyzed to reach an understanding of the perception of the creature in the eyes of the ancient Egyptians with a focus on dynastic Egypt. The material includes a corpus of 38 representations of Sata that has been classified according to shape into four categories and is included in the appendix attached to the current work.   تذخر النصوص الجنائزية المصرية القديمة بالصور والتعاويذ المتعلقة بالعديد من أنواع الثعابين. وبينما أعتبر المصري القديم بعض هذه الثعابين مخلوقات ضارة إلا أنه قام بتأليه البعض ً الأخر. ويعني هذا البحث بدراسة أحد هذه الثعابين، وهو الثعبان ساتا أبن الأرض والذي ظهر في النصوص ثم المناظر المصرية القديمة ابتدأ من عصر الدولة القديمة. ويظهر هذا الثعبان بصورة أساسية في سياق جنائزي ويعتبر أبرز ظهور له في كتاب الموتي حيث يكرس أحد فصول التحولات وهو الفصل 78 لضمان تحول المتوفي الي الثعبان ساتا كما يظهر الثعبان في نصوص ومناظر أخري. وفي هذا البحث تم دراسة وتحليل النصوص والمناظر المتعلقة بالثعبان ساتا للوصول الي فهم وتحديد طبيعة هذا المخلوق في أعين قدماء المصريين منذ عصر الدولة القديمة وحتى نهاية عصر الأسرات. وقد تم حصر 83 صورة للثعبان ساتا تم تصنيفها حسب الشكل الي أربع فئات وتضمينها في قائمة ملحقة بالبحث.
