Abstract

In spite of advances in electrical and computer engineering, the issue of blackouts in the power grid has not been solved. A new method is proposed to alleviate transmission line overloads, created by the outage of a single transmission line. An overloaded transmission line may trip, causing power to be redistributed to other transmission lines, which may get overloaded themselves. This may lead to cascading outages, destabilization, and blackouts. The proposed new method uses the PSS®E to shed load from specific buses and to reduces power output of specific generators. The method was applied to the IEEE 39-bus power system using additional softwares Python, and Excel. All 34 transmission lines were disconnected individually and transmission lines were monitored for overcurrents. The proposed method for reducing loads and generation was found to successfully remove overloads of transmission lines, ensuring stability and continuity of power. The method was found to be effective for power system protection. The method may not be optimal, but may be practical for implementation.
