Abstract
This paper will analyse the power requirements of a general computer system as well as a particular Univac product related to distributed communications processing. Some general criteria for power levels and quality will therefore be developed. Utility requirements and governmental codes (UL, CSA, IEC, VDE, etc.) will be discussed. To provide the power level density and quality required by present systems, Univac's power supply facility in Dorval, Canada, has developed a line of standard power supplies. These supplies are of the off-line inverter type and will be presented in some detail. Modularity has been stressed in the design of these units. Present design effort is now being devoted to the next generation of power supplies. Some insight into the course of this development will be given.
