Abstract
With the rapid modernization of the urban power grid, the increasing demand for XLPE cables makes it a vital part of the distribution network. The traditional withstand test can not achieve the requirement for detecting the potential defects and faults in the cables. Partial discharge (PD) is one of the most conclusive indicators for insulation condition of the cable. However, the typical frequency-tuned series resonant (ACRF) technique can not be used for PD detection, due to the impulse noise caused by the inverter in the system. In this paper, Equivalent Pulse Width Modulation technique and Time Domain Reflectometry Denoising technique are used to enable the ACRF technique to be suitable for PD detection as well as the withstand test. A laboratory prototype was implemented to validate the feasibility of the proposed technique.
