Abstract
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are nowadays the base of many Internet of Things (IoT) applications. One critical issue in developing WSNs related applications and protocols is how to measure the Energy consumption, which is very important for estimating the network lifetime. TOSSIM simulator is one of the most popular simulators for developing and testing WSN protocols and applications. However, it does not support energy measurements, which was tackled by an extension tool called POWERTOSSIM. This tool works separately from TOSSIM where it uses the simulation's output file at the end of the simulation to generate energy measurements. Therefore, TOSSIM and POWERTOSSIM do not support developing energy-aware protocols and applications for WSN, because this type of development needs online energy measurements, while the simulation is running. In this paper, we tackle this drawback by developing an Online Energy Model and integrate it with TOSSIM simulator. The proposed model is verified by comparing its results with the results generated by POWERTOSSIMZ.
