"The Power of Plea: An Analysis of Persuasive Language in Al Aswany's 'The Yacoubian Building' ; with Implications for Arabic Translation"

Abstract

This research project examines the persuasive use of language in Alaa Al Aswany's Arabic literary novel "Yacoubian Building" and its English translation. The focus is on how characters employ plea-like language to convincingly sway others to adopt specific beliefs or take particular actions, with particular emphasis on the novel's political themes concerning corruption and social injustice in Egypt. It acknowledges the challenges faced by the English translator in rendering culture-specific plea expressions into Arabic while preserving their original meaning accurately. To analyze the use of persuasive language, the researcher examines both the Arabic original and its English counterpart. The findings reveal that the vocative and imperative forms of plea expressions are the most prevalent. These linguistic choices reflect the social and political context of Egyptian society portrayed in the novel. Moreover, the English translation effectively captures the intent and meaning of the original Arabic text, ensuring that the persuasive language's impact is conveyed to English-speaking readers. Additionally, the study highlights the significance of plea expressions in contributing to the novel's overarching themes and messages. The persuasive language adds depth and authenticity to the characters' interactions, shedding light on the power dynamics and social complexities prevalent in Egyptian society.
