Marine systems: shoals on the voyage of discovery

Abstract

When introducing new technology it is important to consider the environment in which it will be used. In the case of navigation technology, designers have not always heeded either the environment or shipboard crew who are required to use the technology, often without benefit of training. Consequently, introduction of sophisticated technology has not reduced marine casualties, and has in fact resulted in accidents. The paper draws attention to factors that should be considered in the design and implementation of navigation technology, from the perspective of the end-user.
