Abstract
A low cost VFL receiver known as UKM-SID has been developed by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. This system has been installed at UKM since 2015 to monitor the solar flares and has been used in outreach programmes with school students. Based on the capability of this system to monitor solar flares, analysis on the VLF signal strength observed by the UKM-SID receiver was therefore conducted. A month-long data for August 2015 was analyzed and compared with GOES-15 satellite. Result showed a repetitive and clear diurnal pattern with sunrise-sunset of VLF signal strength throughout the month of analysis. It was found that the VLF signal strength shown was in agreement with the solar flare events where there was an increasing value of the signals when solar flares occurred. A detailed comparison showed that only solar flares of class C4.8 and above (including M class solar flare) affected the VLF signal strength. The result suggests that different classes of solar flares have different effects on the VLF signal strength.
