Abstract
The authors present an overview of fiber hubbing applications of high-speed digital cross-connect systems (DCS). These applications use a cross-connect system such as a DCS 3/1 or similar wideband DCS at the central location, or hub, of a fiber facility network. An examination is made of the physical and logical configuration of the overall facilities network engineered to meet future network demands for mixtures of narrowband and broadband services. This facilities network encompasses the fiber facilities themselves, optical terminating multiplexers, M13 multiplexers or similar transmission terminals, and digital cross-connect systems. A survey is also presented of several classes of DCS applications in fiber networks. DCS roles in networks supporting narrowband services are examined. DCS application to private line services and applications in fiber hubbed networks are also dealt with.<>
