Abstract

At the presented paper I will cover the teaching and learning of German vocabulary in secondary schools in the Czech Republic. Firstly, I briefly tackle the standing of German as the second foreign language at that level of education, then I am exploring the main areas of that specific field of teaching and learning, word families and compounds of German. In the next part of the paper I am speaking on some vocabulary teaching techniques. I am evaluating the effectiveness of some of the commonly used strategies against the background of academic literature and of my own experience.
