Memorial entrepreneurs and dissonances in post-conflict tourism

Abstract

This chapter, which examines cases in Colombia and ex-Yugoslavia, seeks to analyze the role of tourism, and in particular related discourses and representations, in the construction of peace. By analyzing the practices and narratives of various stakeholders and citizens directly or indirectly involved in the tourism sector in post-conflict countries, it challenges the idea that the development of tourism naturally contributes to reconciliation and peace-building. Although public bodies and international organizations often present tourism as a tool that helps enhance peace, research has demonstrated that the reality in the field is often much more complex.
