Diversity in inpatient care

Abstract

Diversity in inpatient care is important for a number of reasons. This chapter discusses the protected characteristics of race, disability, gender reassignment, age, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation, and how the way in which they are approached impacts the assessment and treatment of patients within an inpatient setting. It also highlights the importance of challenging and addressing these issues, and suggests some points of best practice. Diversity is a complex issue and organizations are required to improve their services for patients and staff that fit the protected characteristics. Services and professionals must continue working towards inclusivity and promotion of diversity.
