Abstract
A colour system that can be used for high speed colour classification of fruit in an automatic sorting environment is proposed. The hue, saturation, and intensity (HSI) colour system derived from the red, green, blue system can be represented in various forms. Specifically it is the 'hue' part of the colour system that makes the HSI system so versatile. It is shown that pixels containing the H-I features can be classified using cluster analysis. Supervised and unsupervised classification has applications in colour segmentation and area measurements.<>
