Visual Methods in Criminology

Abstract

This chapter addresses the methodological dimensions of visual criminology. It describes the key methodological tendencies at play in the field—original photography, documentary criminology filmmaking, photo elicitation interviewing, photo-ethnography, and other techniques and tendencies—including their origins, their limitations, and their contemporary development. The chapter also includes an expanded discussion of some of the ethical issues implicated in and by visual criminology and how they might be negotiated.
