John Scott Haldane, 1860-1936

Abstract

John Scott Haldane was born in Edinburgh on 3 May, 1860, the son of Robert Haldane, of Cloan, Auchterarder, and Mary Burdon Sanderson, and brother of Lord Haldane, Sir W. S. Haldane, and Elizabeth Haldane. The centuries-old family of the Haldanes of Gleneagles can count among its members many who have been held in honour in their own time and whose reputation has been lasting, and to this record the branch of the family, the Haldanes of Cloan, was destined to add further distinction. The death of John Haldane on 15 March, 1936, has meant the loss of one who for many years has had a profound influence on the development of both pure and applied physiology, for he was one of those rare men of outstanding genius whose work has implications which extend over a far wider range than the immediate field of their inquiries and results in a change in the whole trend of scientific thought.
