Abstract
The postoperative recovery unit is the place where the patients are taken after a surgical procedure while the effects of anesthesia are expected to subside, and this unit’s purpose is to stabilize vital signs as well as to prevent complications that may occur. In the recovery unit, patients experience many undesirable circumstances after surgery and anesthesia. Among these conditions, the most common ones are respiratory problems, circulatory problems, pain, hypothermia, nausea-vomiting and neurological changes. In the postoperative care unit, close observation and follow-up are required to improve the recovery quality of the patients and to prevent possible complications. The nurses play an active role at every stage of the surgical process and can reduce the duration of hospital stay, complication, morbidity and mortality rates with observation, care and treatment. These factors show the significance of nursing care provided in the postoperative care unit.
