Abstract

This paper presents the importance of error resilience in still image coding in order to be able to transmit images over noisy channels. The motivation for error resilience is described as well as a presentation of the ongoing work on error resilience in the standardising of the next generation still image compression system, JPEG2000. As a case study we focus on some theoretical results obtained comparing the tradeoffs between re-transmission time, bit error rate (BER) and quality for typical mobile and wireless applications, showing the benefits of having an error resilient mode.
