Workplace literacy issues in the pulp and paper industry

Abstract

The concept of basic-skill deficits in today's workforce when viewed in the context of industries' need to compete in the global economy is addressed. A brief summary of the reasons that workplace literacy has become a contemporary issue is presented. Terms and background concepts that are needed for a full understanding of the subject are defined. Three case studies are included showing what some companies in the pulp and paper industry have done to address literacy needs. Suggestions for individuals needing to deal with document redesign are offered, as well as a broad outline of what the industry as a whole might profitably do to limit the impact of skill deficits in the next several years.<>
