Abstract
We present the optimization, by numerical simulations, of the resonator of an existing MW-class frequency step-tunable gyrotron towards higher efficiency and output power. For different values of the length of the middle section of the resonator, the trade-off between interaction efficiency and ohmic losses - mode competition, is investigated and the optimum length is identified.
