Abstract
Utilities striving for Maintenance Excellence recognize that they can only reach this goal by continuing to mature their Strategic Asset Management Programs. They need to move beyond time-based preventive maintenance for their most critical assets. The Smart Grid introduces critical technologies which can help them make this move. Digital Substations, for example, are delivering vast amounts of raw data about the usage and condition of assets in the field. This paper will explore how an Asset Health approach can help utilities leverage the Smart Grid and IT/OT Integration to begin the shift to prescriptive maintenance. This allows the implementation of proactive & financially-optimized maintenance strategies while improving the reliability and safety of the networks. It will also present the lessons learned by American Electric Power in their successful rollout of an enterprise-wide Asset Health solution.
