Abstract
Absence of a concrete definition of smart grid leads to the variations in definitions from person to person, organi-zation to organization. Shockingly this variation in definition is still there even in same country among different agencies. Then the question arises why this is like that, why don’t we have some particular set of definition and characteristics that define Smart Grid concretely. This paper tries to answer this question by going through the different perspective of different countries, different governments and standard setting organizations. After going through the definitions, comes to several set of characteristics. By taking the characteristics as the base or by analyzing these characteristics, one should get confused again why so much variability in the characteristics. Then to solve this confusion, this study takes the approach that what are the reason for all this that we doing. Where are the lags in the present system and what one needs to do? Thus while finding answers to these questions or confusion, this paper tries to answer the question that why there is so variability.
