Abstract
Distributed Flexible AC Transmission Systems (D-FACTS) devices can be used as a distributed solution for relieving congestion in transmission lines. In this work, a model for D-FACTS devices is developed in an electromagnetic transients program and steady-state performance is validated against the existing model in PowerWorld. The devices are implemented in the IEEE12 bus dynamic test system. System performance before and after the addition D-FACTS devices is investigated. The main objective of this comparative study is to verify these two models on the IEEE 12 bus system for steady state analysis in preparation for later studies and then to examine the impact of D-FACTS devices on managing congestion by adding them at different locations. Different modes of D-FACTS operation are also investigated.
