Abstract

The author examines extremely-wideband, high-capacity data storage in the context of requirements for very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) in radio astronomy. He reviews the evolution of VLBI tape recorders. He shows that the need for better sensitivity in VLBI has driven the development of one of those tools, the raw data recorder, which can now record 128 Mb/s for 12 hours. He concludes that basic tape and machine technology to increase capacity and bandwidth with 64-fold to 43 TB and one GB/s has been demonstrated piecemeal. A viable product however needs further refinement and testing of key tape, head, and drive components, integrated channel electronics and genuine production engineering. >
