Abstract
A 1550-nm optical CATV-AM FTTC system has been developed using distributed feedback (DFB) lasers and optical amplifiers 54 AM/VSB (VHF+UHF) channels are distributed. A technico-economic analysis is carried out using the SYNTHESYS (synthetic evaluation of systems) modeling which has been used to calculate the number of components (lasers, optical amplifiers, receivers, splices, etc...) to implement a network. A comprehensive cost database is established, using information from CNET, European RACE projects and VELEC. It turns out that such CATV-AM FTTC Systems are currently competitive with traditional coaxial distribution systems assuming a subsequent decrease in price of the optical components as a function of manufactured quantity.
