Rescission

Abstract

In 1902, an effort led by Lexington Democratic political boss Billy Klair succeeded in rescinding the school vote for women. The rescission was politically motivated, an effort to shore up Democratic control, but also racially motivated. This chapter traces the loss of the vote, efforts to regain it (achieved in 1912), and the move to seek “qualified suffrage” for only certain literate women.
