Abstract

Summary form only given. A number of stakeholders have an interest in the features on any learning environment. Amongst these stakeholders, are the institutional managers, the teaching staff and the students. Institutional managers are primarily concerned with the economic use of the institution's resources. Teaching staff are concerned with the effective and efficient delivery of teaching material. Students are concerned with maximising the effectiveness of their learning opportunities. This paper discusses an application of pervasive computing which seeks to meet the requirements of all three sets of stakeholders. To this end it proposes a framework which takes into account a number of important issues: the range of user devices and I/O mechanisms found in a typical academic environment; a range of diverse location determination mechanisms and their relative accuracies; the communication channels that might be available in such environments which may be employed to communicate between ad-hoc components in the system and between the system and users; scheduling systems deployed within the environment. The paper includes a description of a suite of prototype applications which can be deployed to provide a platform for building a smart learning environment
