Abstract

A tracing method is proposed in this paper to identify lines for outage for ice accumulation prevention on overhead lines during storms. The objective is to increase current flow on at-risk line by sequential outages of other lines in the network. The higher current flow causes more resistive power loss on line which increases temperature on the surface of the conductor. The outages are applied to the system sequentially in a priority order based on the sensitivity of line flow on the at-risk line to the outage of other lines. The procedure is stopped in case of non-convergence of power flow. All of the tracing procedures including power flow and contingency selection are calculated offline to achieve the most proper sequences. A 23-bus system has been used to evaluate performance of the method. All the calculation are done in PSSE software.
