Abstract

Within bioinformatics, both data warehouses and federated databases are used to combine scientific data from a collection of heterogeneous data sources and present it to the user within a consistent view. In both cases, the source schemata are generally assumed to be static a reasonable assumption because of the massive undertaking required to perform a schema evolution. Since mapping a source to the warehouse is considered to be a rare event, little effort is made to reduce the work involved. As a result, custom code is usually hand written to convert the source data into the required warehouse representation.
