Abstract

This study was designed to investigate the antimicrobial activity of Anogeissus leiocarpus, commercially available antibiotics and locally prepared vended herbs in-vitro on some selected clinical bacterial isolates. The bacterial isolates used for this study which includes Staphylococcus aureus, alpha (α) hemolytic Streptococci, Klebsiella species, Escherichia coli, Proteus species and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) were obtained from the bacteriology units of the diagnostic laboratories of Federal Medical Center, Yola and University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. Fresh 24 hours cultures of the isolates were used for the antimicrobial susceptibility test. The antimicrobial susceptibility test was carried out using disc diffusion method on Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella sp. Proteus sp and α-haemolytic Streptococci. The result of the study revealed that the test organisms showed varying levels of antimicrobial susceptibility with some isolates exhibiting multiple-drug resistance to some of the commonly used commercially available antibiotics. This could have been an inherent property of the bacteria or acquired. Of all the antibiotics tested, the test organisms were found to be more susceptible to Ciproxin. In vitro susceptibility test of the extracts of A. leiocarpus showed that the extract inhibited the growth of the test organisms with the exception of αhemolytic Streptococci at 25mg/ml. Also, the test organisms were found to be resistant to 100% v/v the commercially vended herbal preparations failed to inhibit the growth of the test organisms in vitro.
