Abstract
: The Italian writer Anna Franchi (1867-1954) experiences adultery in first person and writes about it in her 1902 autobiographical novel Avanti il divorzio . In parallel, some of the protagonists of her novels and short stories share with the author the fact of being adulteresses: this is the case of some secondary characters in novels such as Dalle memorie di un sacerdote , 1910. This article analyzes the figure of the unfaithful woman in this novel and the reasons for considering her protagonists an alter ego of the writer. It also compares it with some of the best-known nineteenth-century novels of female adultery. The confrontation with these leads us to situate Franchi’s ideas in relation to a new concept of the family and the role of women in it
