Abstract
Scientific and technical progress is essential in our daily life and contributes to our well-being. Today the manufacturing process has evolved in several fields, computer, military, medicine to give more comfort to the individual and therefore the happiness of the individual. To keep up with this evolution several applications have been developed in all domains. However, the host-centric model of the Internet poses several problems in terms of security, reliability, or even mobility support. Today, the majorities of applications are interested in content and no longer need to know its location. Therefore, a change of communication model is recommended towards a model that is more interested in the data rather than the location of the host and Named Data Networking has been suggested. NDN is a novel information-centric networking architecture; it focuses on data and doesn't care where this data is stored. Hence it intends to overcome the weakness in the traditional TCP/IP. In this paper, we present a new classification of NDN applications and make a comparison between the traditional IP stack and NDN. We also highlight different functionalities offered by NDN such as naming, caching, mobility and security, then we present by reviewing the current literature, the features that pushed researchers to adopt this paradigm in their applications.
